— furniture designer Maria Pergay.
I first discovered Maria Pergay’s work through Suzanne Demish at Demish Danant a wonderful gallery owned by Suzanne in Greenwich Village not far from my home there. Completely in awe of Maria Pergay and her furniture designs in steel, so strong and yet so beautiful, I had to know more about her.
Maria Pergay began her career in the mid 1950’s in France at a time when furniture design was dominated by men. Maria initially worked with a variety of materials but stainless steel furniture is what she has become most renowned for. She describes what was then a new material source “as precious as the most precious wood”. Her first collection included chairs (her ring chair being the most recognizable) as well as benches in the shape of waves. Stainless steel became her favorite material and she continued to use it for her designs throughout the 1970’s.
My husband and I are lucky enough to own a coffee table made by Maria. The table is round with two pie shaped wedges that when separated from the round become triangular stools complete with upholstered cushions. The design is simply brilliant!
